The other day, my friend Lisa emailed me some photos from near her house in Door County, Wisconsin. She knows that I'm a sunflower freak and that I would really appreciate these. AND I DID! I'd like to live in this field of sunflowers. They make me so happy and they're so sunny and gorgeous. I have to say that when we did visit Door County in years past, what struck me most was the amazing color and beauty of the
flowers up there. We were there in August and it's truly a sight to see. I guess the weather there is such that the flowers don't peak until later in the summer and they're incredible. Partner the brilliance of the flowers and the clear blue of the sky and I can't imagine much that's prettier.
Anyway, those sunflower photos prompted me to sit down and make a sunflower card. Recently, Kristi from HANNA STAMPS sent me this great sunflower set called I LOVE MY GARDEN. She knows about my thing for sunflowers too and it was really sweet of her to think of me. So I stamped my big flower with Onyx Black Versafine onto watercolor paper. Then I watercolored it using various dye inks from STORAGE UNITS INK & MORE! (They have 60 awesome colors!) I was really happy with how it turned out but let it sit on the craft table for a few day before I made it into a card.
Tonight I sat down to get the card made. I found a new Amy Butler paper pad at Michael's today so I went with that for the patterned layer. It's bright and pretty and complimented the flower colors. Yup, it was a shopping day today...I also bought this delish wide satin ribbon at Paper Source so I had to use that too. The big "button" is from my jar where buttons from clothes go...every one that comes with a new clothing item or that's fallen off of something...I save 'em in the jar. The big pearl is a brad from K&Co. The small pearl is from Kaiser.
Now, here's what I learned tonight...why haven't I learned it before? Not sure because I should have! I had my card planned out and layered and ready to adhere when I decide that the sentiment should go in that lower right corner of the stamped flower. I inked up a little sentiment from Anna White's WSD set called SWEET EXPRESSIONS and proceeded to stamp right on the sunflower layer. Uhhh....CRUD! The inked edges of the little sentiment left inky marks next to the sentiment! WHY-OH-WHY do I not learn this lesson?! Anyway, that left me with limited options on how to fix it. I went with the little sentiment flag since I didn't want to add too much more to this card. It's not the optimal fix but I just couldn't bring myself to try and watercolor the whole flower again. You live and learn, right?! Just keep thinking..."aaahhh, pretty, pretty sunflower..."
This month, they have SIX more single stamps from the new collections...
DANCE and MISSING YOU from the Fairy Tales Collection
and
THANK YOU and LET'S GET TOGETHER from the Friendly Forest Collection
I have four cards to share with you this time around...
You know how I love those robots...these are no exception! They're adorable! The first card features the BEEP BLIP BEEP bot stamp and the second is called LETS COMPUTE. Each of the images comes with it's own little coordinating sentiment. Both cards used patterned paper from that All About Boys stack from DCWV that works perfectly with these fun images. All of the buttons here are from SUINK as well.
SUINK is adding two more little fairies to their FAIRY TALES collection. The first card below features the sweet little MISSING YOU fairy. I added the leaf pile from the LEAF IT TO ME stamp set, also by SUINK. I used the colors in this fun patterned paper from DCWV to color the images. The buttons are from Creative Imagination, the twine from PTI, and the punch from Fiskars. The second card uses the DANCE fairy, although, my little one is dancing while she flits around the flowers. This great sparkly paper is also from the Doodlin' Around stack by DCWV. Buttons and twine are from PTI.
Now that you've visited here...don't forget to leave your comment...you should click on over to DANIELLE's blog...she's next on the list. You don't wanna miss out on prizes, right?! Thanks for visiting!
Not sure about you all but we are counting down to that first day of school in these parts. We have just over a week to go. By the way, am I the only one who remembers not going back to school til after Labor Day? What's up with that anyway? Did we always have to go the 180 days like they do now? So odd!
But, like I said, it's time! To celebrate...uh, or commiserate...the design team at STORAGE UNITS, INK & MORE! are featuring BACK TO SCHOOL cards and projects. There are tons of great papercrafting products out right now that highlight school and SUINK has the perfect set to go along with them....A TOUCH OF CLASS.
I was inspired by a decorated composition book on the HYBRID CHICK blog. Have you subscribed to that feed? The blog features projects by a bunch of different papercrafters....most of them using some sort of digi product. I don't always end up creating the hybrid project but I am inspired each and every time I get the feed. My book is covered by patterned paper included in one of the newest collections by Cosmo Cricket...THE BOYFRIEND. It's so yummy that I had a hard time even cutting into it!
I used various stamps from the A TOUCH OF CLASS set...the desk, the globe, the math problem, the A+, the "class by yourself" sentiment, and a part of the "back to school" sentiment. There's a cute little girl in that set too but since I have a boy, I decided not to stamp her here. I also dug out one of my all time favorite alphabet sets...Tall Tales Alphabet from Stampin' Up! for the title of the book. {I haven't used any SU in ages and I really do need to clean house but I'll never part with my alpha!} I stamped the letters with red chalk ink and then outlined them with a thin black marker, added the shadow with a copic, and the highlight with a white gel pen. I love the overlapping letters!
It's hard to tell but I attached a wide ribbon to the back cover of the book with one of those big Bazzill brads. That way, the ribbon becomes the bookmark...a little something I saw in the HYBRID CHICK version. Yesterday, I bought a new EK punch at Mike's...that's where the big scalloped edge came from. I also used the SU! notebook paper punch, some Nestabilities dies, a chipboard arrow, oooh...and a new die from Sizzix for the big bracket piece. {Got myself a Big Shot Express too recently...that thing cuts like a dream...works on the Sizzix and cuts chipboard! AND used it with my Spellbinders dies too...woo hoooo!} I added a bunch of fun buttons from Creative Imaginations with some PTI button twine.
So, do you think I'd actually let my little guy use this for school? NOT...it's mine....ALLLLL MINE! {Oh dear!}

Here are my cards:
I've said it before...I'm diggin' the little robot images. I'm sort of collecting them whenever I see new stamps. Not sure what I'll eventually do with them all but they're in my "have-to-have-them" category. This little guy comes with the "you compute me" sentiment. I found this awesome new paper pad at JoAnn's this week. It's by DCWV and it's called the Mod-Retro Stack. The designs are all so hip and cool. This particular sheet was a full page of lined-type paper with the flourished edge and the "1,2,3" was printed in the corner. It's hard to see here but all of the edge of the paper is clear raised embossed - most of the paper in the pad has some embossing! I stamped the little bot on the right side of the paper and then stamped him again three more times without reinking. Do you think it looks like movement? That's what I was going for. Anyway, I stamped him again and raised that cut-out image on pop dots. It's a pretty simple card, as they go, for me. 1, 2, 3...you compute me!
This little "SPROUT" fairy goes along with last month's "Summer Fun" fairy. Aren't they darling? I love her little bandana/hat/thingy. This card's pretty straight forward. I created my own little "sprout" with some American Crafts ribbon. All of the paper here is from My Little Shoebox - also from STORAGE UNITS, INK & MORE! I added Dew Drops to the polka dots at the top of the patterned paper and various buttons to the scallops at the bottom.
This little "Thinking of You" stamp includes just what you see at the far right of my card - the one little tree with a birdie beneath. I did some creative masking to create a little forest. It's kind of a solemn card, isn't it. I think it would work for a sympathy note. The patterned paper used is from the La Creme pad from DCWV - all gorgeous and sumptuous papers! All of the buttons are from SUINK.
Now, head off to Tammy Hershberger's blog to see what she's made using these same images!

Note: All patterned papers for these cards are from various collections by MY LITTLE SHOEBOX - available from STORAGE UNITS, INK & MORE! (The paper on the rocket card is the exception - it is from the Little Man collection by Cosmo Cricket.) Except for the brown buttons on the Summer Fun Fairy card, all buttons are also from SUINK. All colored cardstock is by COREDINATIONS - again, available at SUINK. The sentiment on the "take me to your leader" card is computer generated.
This week's challenge with STORAGE UNITS, INK & MORE! is to create a card with a unique shape. For whatever reason, this tree idea came to mind right away. And...while it's not really a "shaped" card per se, I'm goin' with it anyway.
I hand cut the tree and branch shape from the front portion of the folded card. Then, I stamped a tree bark patterned stamp by All Night Media using FRENCH ROAST ink by SUINK to create the tree. I used an oval punch to create the hole for the little pink owl to hoot through.
Speaking of the owls...I think these are just adorable. They're included in another brand new set from SUINK called YOU'RE A HOOT. They're just hanging out in the forest enjoying a "happy bird-day". On a side note, we hung some new bird feeders in the back yard on Sunday and wouldn't you know that between the Blue Jay and the darn squirrels ALL of the seed is already gone. I think they've been having a "happy BIRD-day" too!! My patterned paper is by Bella Blvd. and it's called Family Tree. I used some more new SUINK buttons and some SU! twine and Papertrey ribbon to finish it off.
You can get more details on this week's SUINK Whatchadoin' Wednesday challenge on the SUINK blog. You'll want to be checking in over there frequently in the following weeks. They're celebrating their one year anniversary and there's some big, awesome giveaways and such that'll be coming your way!
